COTM June: Orange Sea Cucumber

COTM June: Orange Sea Cucumber

The Critter of the Month (COTM) for June is the Orange sea cucumber, Cucumaria miniata. This northeast Pacific species is often found wedged in between rocks or crevices at depths from 5 feet to 700 feet. It can generally be identified by its 10 orange bushy tentacles that it uses to feed (see the video). They are easy to spot when feeding because the orange tentacles show up so clearly. Recent sightings are Saltwater State Park in the cobble areas of the reefs and Redondo at the rock reefs along the North Trail line.
