Seven SeaHorse members braved the threatening weather and traffic to gather at Redondo for the annual SeaHorse Photoshoot, our one-dive photo contest. George Barron wins the award for dogged persistence in slogging through traffic from Lynwood for over 3 hours to bring the grill and hotdogs.
Big tidal exchanges have stirred up the water lately, making visibility less than ideal, but 5 divers braved the murk to shoot some no doubt excellent photos. Ed Gullekson, Dave Wakeley, Chris McKenna, Jeff Greene and Pieter Booth hit the water for the contest. Ed, Dave and Pieter did an early dive, because, why not. Dave sat out the 2nd dive, so the 4 remaining divers buddied up and headed out.

The diving…
As you can see in the photos, the tide was very high, over the 3rd step of the staircase, and almost making the MAST pier and buildings look like a houseboat. The rising tide flushed the water some and the visibility was much improved over our group’s earlier dives. It cleared to 15-20 ft. below 20 ft. depth. Everybody saw red octopuses and other critters. Ed reported seeing 5 six gill sharks. Sure Ed.
Post diving…
We ended the diving with the same number of people that went out; in other words, it was a good dive. And the rain that fell while they were out stopped just in time for the post-dive grilling and hanging out.
Special guest, Scuba Jess…
Scuba Jess and her friends were diving at the same time as our crew, and we had a nice time chatting a little pre-dive, while they were gearing up, Jess showed us her haul from their earlier cleanup of Lake Meridian, including a vintage 1992 Olympics themed Coke can, unopened, and some other treasure. Note: if you’re interested in helping with any of Jess’s many environmental cleanups and other activities, see her Facebook page.
The Grilling…
George, fresh off his epic, 3+ hour grueling south, fired up the grill and the dogs, well actually bratwurst, for the post-dive feast. It was great fun just eating and hanging out with our dive buddies. We wish you were there, but there’s always the Beer Dive coming up July 24th at the Edmonds Underwater Park.
Our local diving is awesome, but you really should travel with us!
Just a reminder that we have two trips open for registration right now: Sunset House on Grand Cayman, Nov. 15-22 2025, and Atlantis Resort Dumaguete, Philippines, May 17-27 2026. See the trip pages for details.
Next Up: Beer Dive

The next outdoor club meeting is our Beer Dive, July 24th and Edmonds Underwater Park. It’s kind of like an Easter Egg hunt, only underwater, and instead of brightly colored eggs it’s bottles of beer, and instead of being hidden by a mythical egg laying rabbit, they’re hidden by our intrepid volunteer beer hiding persons.
See the event notice in the Club Calendar for all the details.
