COTM April: Red Rock Crab

Red Rock Crab

The COTM (Critter of the Month) for March was the painted greenling. Three SeaHorses commented that they saw one (or more). The COTM for April is the Red Rock Crab, (Cancer productus). This is a commonly found crab at most sites. It has a red carapace and relatively large claws. One easy to see characteristic is that the tips of the claws are black.

These are sometimes taken for food. Do be careful with these crabs. The claws are strong enough to break clam and moonsnail shells. As such they can really hurt if they catch your finger. When you see one or more, comment to this post with dive site, date and approximate depth.
