May Meeting – Sharks and Rockfish

Twenty two SeaHorses came out to listen to Bob Pacunski from WDFW. We learned about shark species, their habitat and ranges, and methods for tagging and tracking, plus the history and status of our Puget Sound groundfish, their habitat, the effects of overfishing and habitat degradation.

Ship of Gold with Alan Scott

The sinking of the wooden hull steamship, the SS Central America, during a hurricane in 1857 was America’s worst peacetime sea disaster, claiming a loss of 425 lives and over 3 tons of California gold. Alan Scott, a key member of the team that rediscovered the ship in 1988, joined us and shared the adventure in recovering one of the richest treasures from America’s past.

Did you know that fish are actually noisy? I didn't. The pops and cracks you hear on coral reefs are the fish vocalizing, much like birdsong you hear on land. Jake Jurmain reported on his work using acoustics to identify species from their signature sounds.

We will be voting to increase club membership dues $5 per year, for all membership categories. Standard and Associate memberships will increase to $30/year, while Senior members will increase to $10/year.
